Instagram has explained its own ranking, on the record, more than most creators realize. The short version, from official statements only: there is no single algorithm, each surface ranks separately; the current top three signals are watch time, likes and sends; original content is actively preferred over reposts; and watermarked or low-resolution reels are made "less visible." Everything below is a dated statement with a link, no reverse-engineering, no "sources say."
2021: there is no single algorithm
Adam Mosseri's official post Shedding More Light on How Instagram Works (June 2021) established the frame that still holds: Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels each have their own ranking process. For Feed and Stories the signal groups, in order: information about the post, information about the poster, your activity, and your history of interacting with that account. For Reels, the system predicts "how likely you are to watch a reel all the way through, like it, say it was entertaining or funny."
The stable version lives on Instagram's creator site: "No one algorithm decides what you see, because each part of the app, Feed, Explore, Reels, has its own ranking system based on how you use it."
2023: the ranked signal lists, and the shadowban answer
The May 2023 official post Instagram Ranking Explained published per-surface signal rankings: Feed leads with your activity; Stories with viewing history, engagement history and closeness; Explore with post information; Reels with your activity. Two other things went on the record in the same document:
- Watermarks: Instagram makes "certain reels less visible, such as low-resolution or watermarked reels." Recycling TikTok exports with the logo on has been officially penalized since at least 2023.
- The shadowban question: "When we rank content across Instagram, that's not our intention", the closest thing to an official answer the term has ever received.
2024: sends per reach, originality, and Views
Three official moves in 2024 reshaped what "doing well" means:
"One of the most important signals we use in ranking is sends per reach." (Adam Mosseri, July 2024 reel, quoted and embedded by Search Engine Journal)
The useful question before posting became: would someone send this to one specific friend?
- Originality got teeth. The official Helping Creators Find New Audiences update (April 2024) committed to: seeding eligible content to a small non-follower audience regardless of follows; recommending only the original when duplicates exist; labeling copied content with a link to the original creator; and removing accounts that repost others' content "10 or more times in the last 30 days" from recommendation surfaces entirely (The Verge's coverage).
- Views became the primary metric across reels, videos, posts and stories, per Meta's official announcement (Introducing Views, August 2024).
- Trial Reels shipped in December 2024: share a reel to non-followers first, read its numbers about 24 hours later, then decide whether to publish it to everyone (Meta Newsroom, creators blog).
2025: the top three signals, named
In January 2025 Mosseri ranked the signals outright: "The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends", with likes counting slightly more for content from accounts you follow, and sends slightly more for unconnected content. He also named the three metrics creators should watch: average watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach (his video, quoted with links by Social Media Today).
Two more on-the-record clarifications from the same period, surfaced with embedded originals in Buffer's algorithm guide: Stories mostly reach people who already follow you closely, they are a nurture surface, not a reach surface, and hashtags do not meaningfully drive reach.
What this means for a posting workflow
Reading the record end to end, the practical rules Instagram itself has endorsed:
- Make things worth sending to one person; sends per reach is the stated standout signal.
- Hold attention: watch time leads the 2025 top three.
- Post original exports, never watermarked re-downloads, penalized on the record since 2023, enforcement expanded in 2024.
- Use Trial Reels to test before you commit a post to your followers.
- Judge yourself on views, watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach, the metrics Instagram says it uses.
